Does It Work?

Since the beginning of the Program in 1970, students, on the average, have achieved .9 of one year improvement as measured on a standardized oral reading test.  Even more significant are parent and teacher reports of enhance feelings of self-worth and self-confidence, improved grades, less time spent on homework, attitude toward reading, reading for enjoyment. Etc.

What Others are Saying

Susie (not her real name) attended the Program 5 years.  After disappointing attempts to get help for her elsewhere, we brought her to the Association’s Dyslexia Program.  Susie is very bright but both she and I were frustrated with her struggles in reading. Susie now reads above grade level.  Other benefits were (1) the knowledge that Susie is not the only person with dyslexia.  This brought great relief.  (2)  In the Program, she was accepted for who she is; she is not made to feel different because everyone has the same problem. (3) There has been a carry-over to the classroom and she has greater self-confidence.  (4) Formerly, she did not like to read.  Now she volunteers to read at home and in class.  (5) This Program, not only teaches the students, but helps parents to understand and help their child.  (6)  Susie has never not wanted to come to the Program.  She hugs and thanks Mom after each session for bringing her.

A grandmother writes—we are so thankful as so blessed to have the Dyslexia Program available.  It is such a joy to now see my granddaughter’s name on the honor roll.  We travel from Madisonville and know that we have seen remarkable improvement in all areas of her life.

Excerpt from a father—my son entered the Program 7 weeks ago; his self esteem has already improved and we’re very pleased with his progress.

A grateful mom—my daughter became involved in the Dyslexia Program three semesters ago and it has totally changed her life.  She is reading now, outgoing, and looking at the fact that she might be able to go to college.  When we came three semesters ago, she was on a third grade reading level.  Now, she is over a sixth grade reading level.  She did not want to come at first but now I am not allowed to miss.  I drive 1 ½ hours one way to come but the Program is worth the sacrifice.
